The program will begin with an introduction to OCR (optical character recognition), the technology that allows digitized newspapers to be indexed. OCR identifies each character individually, and it is fooled by wrinkles, blotches, or flaked-off type. Methodology that can be used to get around OCR’s limitations will be demonstrated. Some of the most unusual characters Janeen has tracked in newspapers will be highlighted. Finally, there will be a hands-on demonstration of some of her favorite newspaper websites.
